Portland man pleads guilty to assault of black-owned food truck owner

Portland, OR – In a recent court hearing on July 2023 defendant, Daniel Thomas Warren, pleaded guilty to one count of third-degree assault and pleaded no contest to one count of first-degree bias crime. These charges stemmed from an incident in June 2023, in which Warren was accused of attacking the owner of LoRell’s Chicken Shack, a food truck located in Portland’s Creston-Kenilworth neighborhood.

The victim, Darell Preston, sustained severe injuries during the assault. According to Preston’s attorney, the attack was racially motivated. Warren’s sentencing is scheduled for February 21. This comes just weeks after a Portland food truck was destroyed in a fire.

While incidents of customers attacking food truck owners are not necessarily common, it is crucial to be aware of potential risks and take precautionary measures. That being said, it is also important to remember that the majority of customers are not a threat and do not intend to cause harm. Based on this, it’s fair to say that generally, most food truck owners in Portland do not suffer assault while working.
